In 1943, a USS submarine rescues three survivors from a torpedoed hospital ship. One of these is a woman - causing both excitement and fear (it's supposed to be bad luck to have a woman on a ship). But this submarine has something to hide, and before long odd things start happening. Is there something supernatural going on, or is the claustrophobia and stress simply making the crew delirious?
First off, Below is pretty cool to look at, with great cinematography, interesting set design and moody lighting. There's a grimy, sweaty atmosphere you can almost smell and taste. And the score is surprisingly effective to boot.
It starts off as a Das Boot-type war movie. Yes I know it's categorised as 'horror', but I'd say it's an action/thriller with horror elements. Which means less of the blood-and-guts, and more of an intriguing story, with tense and genuinely creepy bits along the way. The characters are interesting, and we get to see some strong acting performances. Ok it's a slow burn at times, but it never gets boring. And the final shot will haunt you for days after.
I enjoyed Below very much, and I'm surprised it's not better known. Don't be put off by the 15 certificate or lack of big names. This is an under-rated little treat, and certainly worth finding and checking out.
