An ex-detective turned pimp is having financial problems because his callgirls have started disappearing. When he notices the missing workers all had a client in common, he assumes the man must be selling them, and tries to track him down. But the truth is far more sinister. And another of his girls, Mi-Jin, is already on her way to an appointment with the client.
This is essentially a psychological thriller and crime drama combined. The plot twists and turns, and draws you into the story. I spent most of the film sitting upright on the edge of the sofa, unable to take my eyes off the screen. The characters are believable and well-written, with outstanding performances by the lead actors. And the cinematography is simply beautiful. While the violent scenes are certainly shocking, they aren't gratuitous. In fact, the gore is mostly just off-camera, and is all the more disturbing for it.
I wouldn't want to reveal more about the plot itself, but I will say The Chaser is a very tense and disturbing movie, that puts you through a whole range of emotions. I found it fascinating and gripping, and I highly recommend it. 5/5
