Brutal Relax (2010)
There aren't many horror movies where the hero is an overweight, hairy man in white Y-fronts. And very few will feature the same level of eye-popping gore as this one!
Our main character is told by his doctor that he has to relax - perhaps take a holiday. So we find him sitting in a puddle on a beach, listening to his Walkman, oblivious to the bloodthirsty zombie-like monsters emerging from the sea and attacking the holidaymakers in gruesome CGI-heavy ways.
Normally CGI would be an instant turn off to me, but in this case it's done so knowingly, and so tongue in cheek, it's hard not to watch the whole brain-and-guts-splattered shenanigans with a big smile on your face. I loved the style of filming, the bright colours and the over-the-top makeup. The audio is excellent, with a strange choice of music that somehow fits the tone of the movie perfectly, and a clever use of sound effects that really adds to the humour.
The gore is clearly CGI in places, but that actually worked as a positive in this, and there are also plenty of practical effects too. And there is one particular 'weapon' that I can honestly say I've NEVER seen used in a horror film before, that really shouldn't be funny - but..
Brutal Relax is available to watch on YouTube for freehere. There is very little dialogue (it's mostly in the opening 'doctor' scene) and this is subtitled. The film is only 15-minutes long, and most of that is taken up by the extended monster attack/fight sequence. But WHAT a 15 minutes! Forget intricate storyline and character development, this is pure fun. And keep watching till the very end. Not only are the 'holiday snaps' over the closing titles very funny in themselves, there is a final surprise ending which is a stroke of bizarre and silly genius! Highly recommended.
