Creepy Crawly (2012)
Two cowboy-hat-wearing farmers find an odd creature in a field, and after poking it with their gun, decide it must be the cause of their mangled livestock. Not surprisingly, the continued prodding wakes it up, causing it to attack one of them. And before you can say "don't bring that thing into the house", they've inadvertently brought danger indoors via the injured man.
The films displays its Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) admiration at the start, with its opening credits intercut with flashed photographs of rotting animal corpses and disturbing noises. We don't actually see the critter itself until later in the film, which I thought was a good touch. Especially as it was a CGI creation that worked far better in a darkened room. That said, watching it scuttle across the wall certainly got this arachnophobe squirming in his seat, and allowing characters to 'just miss' seeing it added to the suspense.
The photography includes spider-eyeline perspectives and Dutch angles, which create a feeling of uneasiness, and there are some wonderfully wince-inducing Foley effects. On the whole the production values are pretty good, it's technically very competent, and the atmosphere and tension are built well. The only thing that let it down for me was the acting. Don't get me wrong, the performances are not bad. But several times I was too aware I was watching people acting, rather than being immersed in the characters.
Interestingly, two versions of the film have been produced, which are scene-for-scene the same but with a different cast of actors. Hence an English version and a Spanish version are both available to watch for free on YouTube. I have to say I much preferred the acting in the Spanish version, but unfortunately this is one of only a few subtitled films where reading the dialogue meant I missed some of the more subtle horror.
Despite saying that, it's still a fun and creepy seven minutes, and well worth checking out. Oh, and one last thing. Keep watching until the very end of the final credits...
