Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981)
After all the murders, Camp Crystal Lake was closed down and the site abandoned. But five years later a new summer camp is opening nearby. As the horny young counselors arrive for training, an unseen figure begins to kill them off. But if it's not the same attacker, then who is it? And why?
Friday the 13th Part 2 might not have Tom Savini's box of special make-up tricks, but it makes up for it with inventive kills, and one of the best final girl chase sequences in any slasher movie. It's Jason's first 'proper' outing, and I do find his pillowcase headgear a lot more effective than the hockey mask in the later sequels. Yes I know how massively iconic that mask becomes, and I realise he looks suspiciously like the killer in The Town That Dreaded Sundown. But the first time we see him properly here - coming right at the camera and glaring through a single hole in a sack - I think he is absolutely terrifying.
The pre-credits sequence is ridiculously long. It tries hard to convince us about the connection between this movie and the previous one, with a whole load of flashbacks. It also uses the Psycho-like trick of killing off the person we expect to be the main character in the first reel. But even though its raises quite a few questions, this opening section clearly sets out the tone for the rest of the movie.
Back at the lake, when Jason grabs his various sharp, pointy objects and gets down to business, it all becomes thrilling and fast moving. And that's how I'd remembered the film overall. So when I re-watched it after all these years, I was surprised that there's a whole 50 minutes before the main killing spree kicks in. I'd completely forgotten the slower pace of the first half.
Ginny is certainly the best Final Girl in the series. She's likeable, bright, resourceful, and has a sense of humour. I'm not entirely convinced by her creative use of child psychology at the film's climax, but to be honest, a believable plot isn't the point here. This is all about cranked up tension, suspense, jump scares, boobs, gore, and having fun while screaming into your popcorn. And to be honest - even after all these years - I still had a great time watching it. And that must say something.
